Write as complete an essay as you can, with

choose between Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton;
and the film Citizen Kane, directed by Orson Welles .
discuss two things you learned this semester that you
can attribute to these works. I don’t expect that any of
you are innocent or sheltered about the workings of
the world, but the characters in these books surely
know sufferings and/or have experiences that go
beyond what you have encountered. You can answer
this as deepening knowledge that you already had
some footing in, or giving new perspective to a
situation somewhat familiar to you, as well as by
discussing ideas or aspects of life that are entirely new
to you. You are also not expected to reveal details of
your own lives – this is not my interest in asking this
question. Tell me instead what these books have taught
you, illustrating this by two significant examples.
Write as complete an essay as you can, with
organization and without repeating yourself. This
assignment isn’t about just “getting the right answer,”
but about writing something particular, important, and
original to you about these literary works.
